The Nigerian Scrap Metal Licensing Authority (NSMLA) is a federal regulatory body established to oversee the collection, processing, and trading of scrap metal nationwide. Our mandate balances three priorities: securing public and critical infrastructure against vandalism and theft, safeguarding public health and the environment in line with international standards, and formalising a sector that supports the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Nigerians.

Common Questions

Quick answers on NSMLA regulation, licensing and compliance.

All individuals, businesses, or entities engaged in buying, selling, collecting, processing, or exporting scrap metal in Nigeria must obtain a valid license from the Nigerian Scrap Metal Licensing Authority before commencing operations.
A standard scrap metal dealer license is valid for one year from the date of issuance. Renewal applications must be submitted at least 30 days before expiry to avoid penalties for operating with a lapsed license.
Required documents include: CAC Certificate of Incorporation, Tax Identification Number (TIN), National Identification Number (NIN) of all directors, proof of business premises, environmental declaration, passport photographs, and the completed NSMLA application form.
You can report illegal activity through our 24-hour confidential hotline at 0800-123-NSMLA (6762), via email at enforcement@nsmla.gov.ng, or through the "Report Offences" button on this portal. All reports are treated with strict confidentiality.
No. Trading in utility infrastructure metals — power transmission cables, railway lines, gas pipelines, water supply pipes, and telecom equipment — is strictly prohibited by law, regardless of whether you hold a valid license. Violators face criminal prosecution under federal law.
